Bayfield Nor’easter in Black and White

This winter has been warm… and that is putting it mildly (pun intended).  To be perfectly honest, I haven’t really been paying attention to the weather lately because all it does is rain.  That is definitely not my kind of winter.  I love snow!

This morning I woke up to a bit of a dusting of snow – and the sound of waves hitting the beach a few blocks from my house.  I looked at my weather app and realized that winds were going to be steady at almost 25mph.  Perfect for one of my favorite Bayfield activities – ferry stalking!

There were only 2 boats today because of the gale, and I headed out for the 11:30 boat from Madeline Island to Bayfield.  As I stood there on the dock, the wind really started to pick up.  The snow became a bit painful as it hit me in the face, so, of course, I was giddy. Ha.  The worse the weather, the happier I am ;).

As I was talking with a friend about who was driving the ferry, I found out it was my friend Cal!  I have always wanted to get photos of him captaining the boat – and this was a perfect opportunity.

I watched him steer the boat towards Basswood Island, and then turn it towards us to get into the harbor.  The front of the ferry came crashing down a few times, and it definitely was a squirrel-ly landing.

Hope everyone is enjoying the fabulous weather!  🙂

{Update:  I found out Cal has a website with his adventures!: Great Lakes Mariner}

    I’m not sure I’ve ever seen one of the ferries “surf” before, but it looks like the Island Queen is getting ready to “hang ten” as she comes into the harbor!
