Sporting Dog Photography – In the woods with English Pointing Labs

Being out in the woods with bird dogs is one of my favorite types of shoots.  I headed out to the Northeast part of Wisconsin by the UP earlier this fall to do a grouse session with two gorgeous English Pointing Labs.  It was over cast and rainy, but the colors really popped because of it.  For those of you who follow me for technical shooting info – I spent a large portion of this shoot using my 50mm 1.2, which a bit unusual for me to use, but  I loved it, and I’ll continue to use it for other sporting dog sessions.  It really isolates some elements of the images when I am shooting between 1.8 and 2.2 – which is great for telling a story with the images.

Huge thanks to the Brules for inviting me to traipse around the woods with them – it was a blast!

The colours really pop with that lens and, like you say, the weather conditions were perfect. There’s something awesome about that kind of light.
