Madeline Island is one of the perfect places on the planet to get married on the beach. It offers an island wedding setting without the need for a passport or a huge budget. The beautiful sand beaches and deep blue water are two of Lake Superior’s best kept secrets.
Accessible by ferry, the adventure getting there is just the start of the fun for your guests. There are huge sweeping lagoons to canoe or kayak, cliffs to dive off of, fishing guides to hire (my husband for instance, ahem ), sailboats to charter, and unusual bars to drink at (including one that originally burnt down-made completely of metal art and random signs – Tom’s Burned Down). Basically, Madeline Island is a big party in the summer months, full of fun & interesting people of all sorts. No matter what kind of person your guest is, they will find something to entertain themselves.
If you are looking for a planned wedding experience, The Inn on Madeline Island offers an all inclusive package. You & your wedding party (and guests) can stay at the InnKeepers Lodge, and have your ceremony outdoors, right on the sweeping lawn facing Lake Superior. The reception can then be feet away in the Great Room of the Lodge. Weddings I have shot there have had bands outside while bonfires have been going right on the beach. Its an absolutely amazing setting! The view of the sunset over the big lake can’t be beat, either.
For a more DIY approach, both Big Bay State Park & Big Bay Town Park offer incredible sand beaches that go for miles. For church – types, St John’s & St Joseph’s are two of the cutest chapels I have EVER come across.
